Pride And Prejudice And Zombies - a book review

Pride And Prejudice is great, but let's see what this adaptation brings to the table. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies is by both Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. Let's dive into a classic unlike the original.

Shockingly, it doesn't go as differently as you would expect. It is the same love story - but with a few zombie fight scenes, some surprise zombie attacks, and some hilarious sentences that definitely made Jane Austen turn in her grave. Some will look at this book as an abomination, but others will laugh and enjoy the contrast between a calm regency romance and a zombie regency romance. I suggest you read the original classic before you read this, simply to see what changed.

If you want my thoughts on the original love story itself, here is the original review of Pride and Prejudice: click here . I'm not talking about that here because I already talked about it.

Overall Thoughts

I was in love with this hilarious book the minute I started reading it. I'm sure Jane Austen is rolling in her grave, but I like it. To be completely honest, you don't get much change in storyline - except for the Netherfield ball becoming a zombie attack and other things (like Charlotte and Collins' storyline change). They stick to the original romance and add the "unmentionables" (the undead) into the background plot. The characters also mention more weaponry and fighting because they have to defend themselves from the "unmentionables".

I know a few people who won't read it. That's a choice they can make. I don't think this book is for everyone - and I'm sure you'll find that out, too, if you mention it to a friend who reads Jane Austen. Some laugh and others shake their heads. This publisher also features Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters.

How gorey is it? Quite a bit of blood shows up, but I can handle it - and I'm not into gore. It's zombies. I saw the blood and violence coming. They don't go into graphic detail, but there were moments that made me glad I wasn't eating. For example, Lizzy Bennett eats a ninja's heart and strangles another one with his bowels. Don't eat and read. Not to mention Charlotte Lucas slowly becoming the undead.

I loved the scene where Lady Catherine challenged Lizzy over Darcy's proposal. The only thing I didn't love is killing off Mr. Collins by suicide after Charlotte was beheaded. It balanced out at the end. It's still a five star book for me. The suicide was a bit much, though.

If you like this book...

There are more in this series. This is a series. The next one follows a married Lizzy Bennett and more zombie attacks. If you loved this, try that. I haven't yet decided if I'm continuing the series, but if I do you'll see the review for it.
