Thornhedge - a book review

Thornhedge is a twisted fae tale, where the princess in the tower is evil and the fae creature is in the right to put her to sleep. This is a twist on sleeping beauty by T. Kingfisher. Let's get into it.

This book, a 4 hour audio experience, is so deep and wonderful, while still being dark. This twist on the sleeping beauty story plays with dark fae lore and the idea that we heard the original story incorrectly, that the tower was originally meant to protect us from a changling.

Review

Our story begins with Toadling, a woman who is and isn't fae. Read it and you'll understand. She is the original daughter that the changling replaced. She's half-fae because she was raised by fae and changed to become fae. I know, it's confusing. She was sent back to make sure the changling child "did no harm to those around her", which was a tall order to say the least.

After a while, 200 years in fact, a knight comes by and doesn't leave until he knows the secrets of the tower. He bonds with a lonely, anxious Toadling and she eventually comes to like him and tell him the truth of the story. They go into the tower and are forced to do the only thing that will protect the world; they accidentally kill the changling and it turns out that is the original mission.

The emotional depth of this story was staggering. Toadling is convinced she failed everyone around her and constantly asking "why me?" and saying someone else should have been sent. I think I can relate. She also tried kindness first and love first, saying her love should have been enough to chang the changling and make her behave. But we all know that people can't change unless they want to. Her self-esteem is also in the dirt, but as the knight says, he's not overly handsome either. They are both calling themselves failures. I relate hard to Toadling. That line about "my love should have been enough" hit me like a brick through a glass window.

Conclusion

Five stars. It was a one-day read for me and I was so emotional afterward. Oh my gosh, I expected whimsy and got a dark fae tale with emotional depth. Read it. Buy it. It's worth your money.
