The Hash Shop (1930) Cartoon - Oswald the Lucky Rabbit

I watched another Oswald. It was not the most cursed one. I prefer to watch Hell's Heels (another Oswald), but not the most cursed. Honestly, it's an 7 out of 10. Stars are missing because it is still a little cursed.

This is remarkably similar to another cartoon I watched - the one that Betty Boop was debuted in. This is not Fleischer, though, it is universal. We have some cursed images in this one. A tin of milk with udders, Oswald being shoved into a cow through his mouth, a hippo that definitely can't sing...I don't love that.

I'm not commenting too much on sound quality. 1930 was not known for high sound quality or excellent voice acting. We're looking at the early years of cartoons and sound combined. We're looking at the start of a journey, not the high quality we're used to in our 2025 entertainment. Let's be real. I couldn't understand most of the hippo's song and I'm not too surprised.

What wasn't cursed

It was not the most cursed cartoon ever. I didn't feel like my morning coffee was drugged, which either means I've watched enough to set an expectation of watching cursed cartoons or this one wasn't that bad. I don't know which. Let's put it like this; it's got cursed scenes in it, but not the whole time.

A little Oswald running around as a waiter where everyone yells for everything is strangely relatable. Someone calls for a hot tamale and he whistles for a hippo to sing. He also uses food as an instrument and mostly gets yelled at. It didn't have me laughing a lot, though. It was just okay.

What was cursed

The ending needs some comment. Oswald mocks a guy with a dancing cow instead of a steak (as much as I understand the dialogue, anyway) and then gets shoved mouth-first over the cow. He's then forced to dance as the cow? What? I didn't like that. It left me with a "please no" thought. It lowered the star rating of this cartoon by quite a lot.

The hippo wasn't my favorite, either. You see, it oils its tongue to hit the high note, seems to have no top, and generally sounds horrible. I wasn't thrilled at that point. I'm not loving the Oswalds two-thirds of the time. This is the third one I've watched.

Conclusion

I liked Hell's Heels, didn't like Spooks, and only minorly disliked this one. For real, I don't feel great toward Oswald. Fortunately, this is my last Oswald to review, so I'm going to finish this review and be done with him. This was merely okay, if anything. I hate the ending. The rest was fine. Didn't have me laughing. I don't feel like someone drugged my snacks.
