Coming of Age by Andrew Hall - A book review

Coming of Age by Andrew Hall is a devotional, with space to put down your thoughts as you go through it. It's written by a friend of mine (who will also see my review on his Amazon page). Let's get into it.

This book features a word a day, with thoughts about that phrase and questions to consider. This is not a fiction book, which is usually what I review. Today I'll talk about my experience with this devotional.

Andrew Hall starts with proving his credibility as a public speaker. He's using this book for his public speaking, in fact, so you might find him motivational speaking before you find this book. He's charismatic, smart, and gives good advice.

My review is not in the same format as my other reviews, mostly because I review fiction primarily (sometimes nonfiction). I will rate it in stars, as usual, but those stars will be based on how inspired I was. This is not my normal way of rating a book. I don't usually review journals and devotionals on my blog. If you like this, and I do find more of these, I can do more of it. I'm reviewing this one to help my friend, Andrew Hall, in his writing career. I also promise an honest review, because he deserves honesty and you do, too.

Format

The format of this book is a page of inspiration - a word of the day, if you will - and a journal space. You see the word or phrase of the day, read the page below it, and write your thoughts. Already, I was impressed. It is easy to use. I was inspired from word one.

In reviewing this, I am not using it as intended (a word a day being the intention). I am reading it a lot at a time. You should probably not do that. I just like having reviews up on time for my blog. The idea of the word of the day or phrase of the day is a beautiful idea. I love it.

He also left plenty of journal space, something that I adore seeing. Some people in the world write short sentences and bullet points. Other people in the world can write entire books in journals for one day's entry. This strikes a happy medium between the two. You don't need a separate journal to journal your thoughts on the word or phrase - unless, of course, you want to do that.

The Inspiring Words/Phrases

The only word that was weird to me was Vice, but after reading the explanation, it makes some sense. Also, he adds extra reading if you are confused. That's good to do when you have only one page to get thoughts across. His questions for the journal portion were thoughtful. I treated it like he intended you to - as a journaling experience. Again, he left plenty of space for your thoughts. Mine were short. Yours might be long or mid-length.

The questions were thought-provoking, most of them easy to answer. Some I didn't have an answer for (but my life isn't yours, so you'll have vastly different responses). It was a good way to open up new ideas to others. This is probably a get-everyone-their-own scenario, mostly because the questions were personal to one person. Maybe you don't want everyone seeing your answers and journals. It's up to you.

Overall Thoughts

It's hard to star rate a devotional, but I'm giving it five stars. The reasons are simple. It's easy to read, enjoyable, and has good advice. Everything is sound and applicable to anyone who reads it. All they have to do is choose to apply the knowledge.

Andrew, I know you're reading this. Thank you for writing this book. It's beautiful, gave sound advice we can all follow at any age, and makes me think. You are inspirational. Keep writing. I would read more.
