The Whim Challenge #1 - Reading books that you bought on a whim

Today's challenge is something I thought of while staring at my home bookshelves, and thinking about the many ebooks I acquired over the years. We all buy or pick up books on a whim, but how long do these books sit on your shelves before you read them? This challenge is directed straight at that category of books.

This challenge is simple, allowing for some mood reading. You go up to any shelf of your choice, or all of them, and decide on one or more books. You read it, you decide if you'll keep it, and do this as many times as you please.

Rules:

1. The book can't have a familiar author.

2. The book can't be given by friends/family or suggested to you before you acquired it. If you had it suggested after you got it, this rule doesn't count.

3. If you are familiar with the movie plot, leave it.

4. It has to be a book you picked up on a whim.

5. If you DNF (do not finish) the first book, you pick up another.

With these rules in mind, go up to any bookshelf you please (or all of them, whim books are all over my shelves) and grab a book to read. I'm reviewing one book, and if I don't like it I can pick up another. I'll tell you what I DNFed if I did DNF the first one.

No Such Person by Caroline B. Cooney

This book starts with a first chapter that doesn't explain much (but is quite interesting), then the second chapter goes into the life of Miranda and a horrible boating "accident" that Miranda knows wasn't an accident. It illuminates the relationship between Miranda and Lander. Already, we see something is very wrong. The first chapter is a woman being arrested, not knowing who was murdered or if she did it - just that she was flirting and shooting in the woods with someone and now the police have taken her in. She doesn't even know who's dead. This was enough to tell me I had my head on straight when I picked this up. It makes you want to know what is going on right away. It's also short. In audiobook form, it claims to take six hours to read - much shorter than most audiobooks. I listened a bit, then went to my physical copy to finish it off.

Five stars! This was a wonderfully written thriller/mystery with a great ending and character growth. You see from Lander and Miranda's point of view. It is a one-day read. I could have read this in one shot if left uninterrupted on a goal-less day. I finished it just before I had to leave for work, so a definite win in my book. Short, intriguing, and great characters. I think I'll check out more of this author.

No, I won't spoil the ending, but there are a lot of little dialogue phrases that can lead you to the right conclusion. I found a lot of Chekov's Guns (details put in to lead somewhere) all over the book. The evidence is all in front of you in Miranda and Lander's thoughts. Pay attention.
